DEEP SOUTH KIKOS NEWS
September 2009
Once again, I am late at getting this news page completed and ready on time.  I am having some
trouble with my photo editing software, so I will be posting photos without the nice neat
borders.  Hopefully, I will get that worked out soon.

We had a visitor at the beginning of the month that I had to share.  Mallory and I came up on this
creature.  I wasn't sure what kind of turtle it was, but I was so fascinated with how it's tail
looked so much like a dinosaur tail.  I proceeded to straighten it's tail out with my foot, when
that turtle jumped around so fast and snapped at my foot.  I took photos of it, because I didn't
think anyone would believe me if I tried to describe this thing.  By the way, not all turtles are
slow as they portray them in children's stories.   Later I found out he WAS a snapping turtle
and  he would definitely snap whatever came near.  Here are the photos.
We also had a fun day on the farm.  Shane decided to let the cows mow the grass down the
road at our vacant farmhouse, instead of mowing it himself.  We all sat and watched the cows
do the work, and didn't even break a sweat.  Later on, Shane took the kids for a ride pulling a
feed trough behind the mule.   What a great day that was!
The last week of the month Shane and I cut and baled the hay.   It was a race against the rain.  It
has been unusually rainy this year for the month of September.  It will soon be time to plant
clover for the winter!  There should be some good eatin' around here for the animals with the
clover this year.
Can you see anything wrong with this photo?  If you will look closely, the tractor had a flat.
That's the kind of luck we run on around here.  There were only a few rows left to be baled.  At
least Shane was able to rob a tire from the other tractor and pick up where he left off.  Earlier in
the day he also had to weld the rake twice!  Shane says baling hay is like Nascar, you have to
take a pit stop.
